StruCalc 8.0 Cantilever Hip Beams

Periodically as the release date of StruCalc looms nearer (2nd Quarter 2008) the development team will give you teasers of new features that have been added. This week we are featuring the new cantilever Hip/Valley Beam Design feature inside the Roof Beam Design Module.

What this new feature allows you to do is take a hip/valley beam that is supported at both ends, add an intermediate support. Now you have the option to cantilever one end of the beam and add a point load at the end.

The first hip/valley beam module shows you your options:

Cantilever Hip Beam One

Selecting Intermediate Support gives the new cantilever options:

Cantilever Hip Beam Two

Above the hip/valley beam is supported at both ends A & B. Selecting Cantilever Support A will remove support A and cantilever the beam allowing you to add a point load on the end:

Cantilever Hip Beam Three

This feature will be useful to designers who need to use cantilever hip beams to support a ridge beam. As always StruCalc then determines the trapezoidal loads along the hip beam and adjusts for the slopes.

2007 California Building Code Implemented

In order to ensure compliance with the 2007 California building code, we have added this code as a selection
for StruCalc users. This code can now be accessed by going to the main menu and selecting:

Utilities > Settings > Code > and selecting the 2007 California Building Code using the drop down list titled Building Code

 StruCalc Settings

Doing so ensures we will use all up to date calculations and stress values that have went into affect
for the 2007 California Building Code January 1st, 2008.

It’s a minor addition to our software but it will alleviate any fears our California users may have when submitting StruCalc spec sheets to building officials.

Just another example of how StruCalc strives to keep our users on the cutting edge of design today! View more about this exciting code change in our article about the 2007 California Building Code

StruCalc 7.0.13 Free Upgrade Released

The StruCalc Development Team has released what will most likely be the last version 7.0 free upgrade patch. You may download this patch by going here or in your StruCalc program on the menu selecting Help > Update StruCalc and following the wizard directions.

7.01.13 Minor Upgrade Notes:
————————-
This minor upgrade will update all previous versions of StruCalc 7.0.  Please note that it will not update versions 1.X, 2.X, 3.X, 4.X, 5.X or 6.X of StruCalc.

You may be required to input your keycode again after the installation of the patch.  Contact Cascade Consulting Associates if you have misplaced this information.

Changes/fixes in the 7.01.13 patch:
———————————–

  • Added the 2007 California Building code.
  • Updated stress values.
  • Fixed error in the column module for fully braced built up 2x members.  The cp reduction was not being set to 1.0.  This is a conservative error.
  • Fixed a crash when renaming a member in the project manager and leaving an ending space.
  • Limited the unbraced length for a multi-span hip/valley beam to the length of the beam.

Website Overhaul

The entire website has being converted to a content management system.

We’ve taken all of our existing web pages and moved them into an easy to manage system called WordPress, so that any of our employees may be given login usernames and passwords to edit or add content.

In doing so, we intend to add information and articles regularly relating to the design industry. Please check back regularly for updates, upcoming product information, conferences, how-to’s, forums, and other points of interest that StruCalc will be involved in.
